Why The Golden Girls Were Cut From Ralph Breaks The Internet
Ralph Breaks the Internet just hit theaters, and the many audience members are being treated to cameos from some of their favorite Disney characters. The Disney Princess scene is stealing all the spotlight, but the directors cut cameos from four of Disney's most well known and beloved characters: The Golden Girls.
Yes, you read that right. The Golden Girls were almost in Ralph Breaks the Internet, but they were cut because it was too confusing why they were there in the first place.
Some explanation is in order. In Ralph Breaks the Internet, Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz journey into the internet to find a piece for Vanellope's broken arcade game. That search eventually sends Vanellope to Oh My Disney, a real-life website dedicated to all things Disney. The site is filled with lists, clips, and quizzes about popular Disney properties -- and that apparently includes The Golden Girls.
Ralph co-directors Rich Moore and Phil Johnston told Yahoo Entertainment they were surprised to find the Disney site was filled with Golden Girls content. A quick search on the website and one can find dozens of Golden Girls articles, including one called "Literally Just Golden Girls Gifs." The reason that the award-winning sitcom about four sassy women living together appears so often on the site is that the characters are technically owned by Disney. This gave the co-directors the idea to include them in the movie.
So, Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia were thrown into the movie animatic, but they were removed because if you aren't familiar with Oh My Disney or with the internet's obsession with the show, then you probably wouldn't understand why The Golden Girls are there. It was just too confusing, so the foursome was cut from the film in favor of easier to grasp cameos like Buzz Lightyear or Stormtroopers.
Well, maybe cutting The Golden Girls is a hard slap to those who love the sitcom, but there is plenty else to love in Ralph Breaks the Internet. The sequel is getting positive reviews from critics and it's doing well at the box office with a five-day projection of $84 million. The sequel is supposed to be a fun imagining of what the internet looks like with plenty of Disney fan service thrown in for good measure.
There are no Golden Girls to be found, but you can see plenty else in Ralph Breaks the Internet, which is out in theaters right this moment.
