4 Reasons Why A Quiet Place 2 Is A Good Idea

Warning: mild spoilers for A Quiet Place are in play. If you haven't seen the film, and want to stay unspoiled, bookmark this page for future reading and head on out.

When something like A Quiet Place hits theaters with as much impact as it did this past weekend, sequel talk is inevitable. A sleeper hit striking like lightning, and packing a hell of a punch, is always something that Hollywood wants to cash in on, with sequels being the biggest and most often used method to do so. But is A Quiet Place 2 a good idea? Well, that depends on who you ask, as some aren't as optimistic as I am about a potential sequel's chances.

Bringing back the world of A Quiet Place for, at the very least, one more entry isn't a terrible thing, in my honest opinion. In particular, there are certain aspects to the first film that could really lead to future success, further cementing the first film's place as a modern landmark in horror history. Let's discuss this further.

The Abbott's Story Isn't Over YetAfter introducing us to, and putting us through the wringer with, the Abbott family in A Quiet Place, seeing Emily Blunt's face light up in dark glee as she prepares to take her revenge is the sweetest ending possible. But once the euphoria wears off, we start to wonder what happens next. Are there really just two more monsters? Does she defeat them with the help of Reagan? Even if they do defeat the monsters, what's next? The film may have left us with a fantastic cliffhanger, but when we've come to root for the Abbotts as hard as we did in A Quiet Place, the least they can do is give us A Quiet Place 2 to wrap up their story.

There's Room For Other One-Off Films In This UniverseWhile we do want to see a definitive continuation / wrap-up to the story of the Abbotts, we can also concede that it may not be the best idea for a sequel. That cliffhanger does work, and if this first family of silence is off the table, that's fine and dandy. But given that A Quiet Place sets up both a huge invasion / conflict backstory, as well as a general dynamic of low dialogue / high tension film, both of those routes could yield another inventive entry in the series. Not to mention, there were a handful of farms that were seemingly picked off one by one in A Quiet Place, so seeing how they fared would keep the same brilliant constraints on the Quiet Place universe, without having to touch the Abbotts.

It Could Help Sharpen The Series' ApproachUltimately, if there's going to be a sequel to A Quiet Place, all involved need to think of one question going in: how do they top the original? Much like Cloverfield is a shot in the arm to sci-fi anthology storytelling, A Quiet Place could be a great gateway to another series that explores a similar concept across various settings. Different locations across various countries around the world would lead to more clever spins on the first film's formula. With the basic rules in place, any new setting is a new obstacle course for a potential Quiet Place sequel to race through; and revisiting the concept of the anthology, we could see new families struggling to survive the beasts that are attracted by the merest sound.

Horror Needs A Franchise Like A Quiet PlaceUltimately, the best reason that A Quiet Place 2 is a good idea is the fact that the horror world needs a franchise like this one. Reliant on tension and a well-crafted character narrative, the first film gave horror fans everything they wanted, while also appealing to overall moviegoers that may shy away from the genre's reputation. Landing a successful sequel would only help bring more unique audience members to the horror table, allowing them to possibly dip their toes into the deeper ends of the pool. Every genre has its champions that reach across the board to tout their merits and bring in new fans, and A Quiet Place could be the first horror movie since The Ring that might just do that.

After a decade of filmmaking, the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe is coming to a head with the final few installments in Phase Three. Almost every major character in the MCU joined forces to battle Josh Brolin's Thanos, who was hell bent on destroying half the galaxy in order to "save" its overpopulated occupants. The Russo Brothers threw moviegoing audiences for a loop by allowing the Mad Titan to win, accumulating the Infinity Stones to facilitate his mass murder. Fans were left to watch in horror as their favorite characters turned to dust, and left with nothing but disdain for Thanos in the wake. But comic book aficionado and director Kevin Smith seems to think that the villain wasn't that bad. After all, he could have killed everyone.

From a certain perspective he's a hero. He could have literally wiped out everybody with one snap. I call that mercy.

If there's one word that hasn't been associated with Thanos, it's mercy. That is, unless you're one of his twisted followers from The Black Order. Let's break down exactly what Kevin Smith is proposing here.

A pod dedicated to all things nerdy and comic book related, Smith has weighed in on every silver screen superhero flick you could imagine. This obviously includes Avengers: Infinity War, a blockbuster whose affects are still being felt by the fandom.

Having all of the Infinity Stones certainly gave Thanos the ability to kill every single denizen of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But Josh Brolin's character always maintained he was doing it for the greater good, as it was the only way to save the Galaxy from its insurmountable overpopulation. And he succeeds, with the film's final moments revealing a newly revitalized Titan for the Mad Titan to call home. Thanos completed his task, but at what cost?

It should be interesting to see how Thanos' finger snap is addressed in Avengers 4, which is still nearly a year away. Infinity War ended with Captain America wondering what happened, and that's exactly what fans have been feeling. And while there are two blockbusters in between Infinity War and Avengers 4, all eyes are on how the MCU changed in the wake of the snap. How much time has passed? Can the fallen heroes be brought back? We're just going to have to wait and see, while allowing Captain Marvel to satiate our appetites.

Next year, the world's most famous giant lizard returns for Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Godzilla will have many challengers to the throne in the sequel, but we all know that a showdown with King Kong looms on the horizon in 2020. The two monsters have yet to square off in the modern era, and Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island take place years apart from each other. So the question becomes, will Godzilla: King of the Monsters set up King Kong and the conditions for his eventual clash with Godzilla? Director Michael Dougherty confirmed there will be some hints, saying:

It's not like we're bending over backwards to introduce Kong, but there's definitely some bread crumbs.

So those looking for hints of King Kong will be likely to find them, but the movie isn't going to hammer you over the head with the giant ape by the sound of it. I imagine that we may hear mentions of Skull Island or the lost expedition of 1973. The Monarch organization will play a big role in King of Monsters, and Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston's characters from Kong: Skull Island were recruited by the organization in that film's end-credits scene, so maybe their pictures are still laying around. Just small seeds being planted for what else is out there. There isn't another Kong film between this one and Godzilla Vs. Kong to do any of that heavy lifting, so it makes sense that there will be some stuff in King of Monsters to lay the foundation for the two halves of Legendary's MonsterVerse to finally unite.

It is encouraging to hear that, as Michael Dougherty told Entertainment Weekly, King of Monsters isn't bending over backwards to introduce Kong. Franchise films can often suffer when they focus too much on setting up future movies and forget to tell the present story. At this point, everyone knows who King Kong is, and the giant ape just had a movie of his own. We'll all be excited to see Godzilla Vs. Kong, but we want to enjoy King of Monsters first. A few breadcrumbs and maybe a fun post-credits scene will suffice to set the stage for the epic clash.

Godzilla's dance card in King of the Monsters will already be fairly jam-packed as is. The giant lizard will be facing off with Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah. You don't want to overlook these foes, King Ghidorah especially. The three-headed, winged monster is Godzilla's archenemy and a serious threat to the heroic protector. So this is no tune-up fight; Godzilla's got his work cut out for him. After that, King Kong should be light work, especially with Godzilla's atomic breath, although I imagine the ape has a few tricks up his sleeves.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters hits theaters on May 31, 2019, with Godzilla Vs. Kong to follow on May 22, 2020. For movies hitting theaters a bit sooner to keep you entertained while you await the giant monster mayhem, check out our release schedule.
