Who Paul Bettany Is Playing In Solo: A Star Wars Story

After months of waiting for looks at Solo: A Star Wars Story other than the behind-the-scenes photos director Ron Howard posted on social media, Lucasfilm finally obliged with week with a Super Bowl TV spot, a teaser trailer, several posters and numerous pictures. Most of the movie's principal characters are now on full display, but one of the notable absentees is Paul Bettany's character. We're going to have to wait a little longer to see official footage of this character in Solo: A Star Wars Story, but at least now we know what to call him: Dryden Vos.

Last year, it was rumored that a character named Dryden Vos would appear in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and now it's been confirmed by EW that this is who Paul Bettany is playing. Dryden is simply described as a crime boss who Han Solo will cross paths with during the movie, putting him right at home with the other folks who part of the galactic underworld, like Woody Harrelson's Tobias Beckett and Thandie Newton's Val. What's unclear is if Dryden will be one of Han's allies or enemies during Solo: A Star Wars Story. Obviously the majority of these characters will be criminals, but we'll have to wait and see if Dryden is one of the clear-cut bad guys.

Paul Bettany was brought onto Solo: A Star Wars Story late into the game to replace Michael K. Williams, who had shot all of his scenes during principal photography, but was unable to return for the reshoots. Williams described who he was playing as a "half-human, half-animal," but when Bettany joined the cast, the character was redeveloped to be a full human. While Bettany, like the rest of the cast, has stayed tight-lipped about Solo: A Star Wars Story's specific story beats, he assured Star Wars fans back in December that the movie will deliver everything we'd want to see from a tale centered on the Cornelian smuggler.

It's worth mentioning that Dryden Vos shares the same last name as Quinlan Vos (seen above), a Jedi Knight who was based on a background character seen in The Phantom Menace. Quinlan made numerous appearances in Expanded Universe material, and while those particular stories are no longer in continuity, Quinlan remains a canon character thanks to him popping up in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and starring in the book Dark Disciple alongside Asajj Ventress. However, don't assume this means that Dryden and Quinlan are connected to one another. If Antilles is the "Smith" of the Star Wars universe, maybe Vos is the "Johnson."

Why The Doc Savage Movie Hasn't Happened Yet, According To Dwayne Johnson

Dwayne Johnson is involved in so many films that it's impossible for him not to have a backlog waiting in the wings. However, one that has been talked about for a long time, with little movement, has been a Doc Savage movie. The project is set to be written by Shane Black and star The Rock in the title role as the pulp-era adventurer, but things have been very quiet on that front for a long time. Now, Dwayne Johnson reveals the reason for the delay is in regards to business issues around the rights to the character. According to Johnson...

That project had a few issues, not creative issues but more so business affairs issues --- where the project once was, who had rights to it, where we were trying to move it to. There was a lot of that, which we're still kind of working through.

Dwayne Johnson has Rampage hitting theaters this weekend, another pair of films, Skyscraper and Fighting with my Family set for later this year, and numerous other projects from Disney's Jungle Cruise to a Fast and Furious spinoff to DC's Black Adam down the line. It wasn't clear where Doc Savage was going to fit in all that but based on what Johnson tells Collider, it likely won't be fitting in anywhere, as the project isn't ready to move forward until these rights issues are sorted out. These are the sorts of issues that can often take quite some time to clear up, so there's no telling when Doc Savage could be ready to go.

While The Rock's initial comment makes it sound like the Doc Savage issues are being actively worked through, the next thing he says is a bit more ominous, making it sound like it's possible these rights issues could hold the movie up indefinitely.

At the end of the day, Shane's such a spectacular writer or director, but whether it's that project or something else, we've made a pact that we're going to work together at some point in our careers.

If Dwayne Johnson is using the word or it could mean that he and Shane Black could conceivably work on some other movie together instead of Doc Savage, likely because the pair could decide the business issues are not going to reach the conclusion they want, and they leave the project behind. That would be really unfortunate as there may not be a better actor alive today to play the role than Johnson. Doc Savage is the perfect hero who has been physically and mentally trained since birth to be the best at everything, and if that isn't how Dwayne Johnson came to be, I'm not sure how he really exists.

A decade after the injustice of The Dark Knights Best Picture snub, a superhero movie was finally nominated for the Academy Awards highest honor. That film was Marvel Studios Black Panther, a box office behemoth and cultural phenomenon that went on to collect three golden statues, but missed out on Best Picture. That was a disappointment to many, including Avi Arad, the former Marvel Studios CEO and Chairman and longtime Marvel producer. Speaking about Black Panthers Oscar loss, Avi Arad said:

I was heartbroken that Black Panther didnt get the Academy. It could have, but you know, [the voters] they always looked at superheroes like it was a Yabba dabba doo kind of a thing versus something that mattered or something that was going to last.

Despite no longer being with Marvel Studios, Avi Arad was still rooting for Black Panther to get the win for Best Picture at the 2019 Academy Awards, so much so that he was heartbroken when the statue went to Green Book instead. Avi Arad clearly believed that Black Panther was deserving of the award, but as he told Deadline, he thinks that Academy voters still look at superheroes as some Fred Flintstone silliness that is beneath more traditional Oscar films.

That Academy bias against from superhero movies is well established, but the tide has slowly begun to turn, especially after The Dark Knight, with movies like Logan earning an Oscar nomination and Black Panthers 7 nominations. Nevertheless, Avi Arad still seems to believe that some voters feel that superhero movies dont matter and wont stand the test of time.

You can certainly understand Avi Arads investment in comic book movies and desire to see them not only succeed, but also be recognized as art with value that is deserving of the kind of recognition that films considered more highbrow receive. Avi Arad has been working on Marvel projects for decades and believes in the brand.

Avi Arad was an executive producer on the beloved 90s X-Men animated series, and the 2000 X-Men film that began the comic book movie age. Hes had his hands in the genres highs like Spider-Man 2 and its lows like Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer. It must mean a lot to him to see the genre come so far, and it makes sense that he would want it to finally attain the respect and legitimacy that a Best Picture win rightfully or wrongly confers.

Alas, Black Panther did not win Best Picture, but it did win three other Oscars: Best Costume Design, Best Original Score and Best Production Design. Avi Arad wanted it to win more, but Best Picture was always a long shot and it is certainly a trend in the right direction. And he is far from the only one who is disappointed with how Best Picture turned out.

The night wasnt a total loss though, far from it. Through his Avi Arad Productions, Avi Arad was a producer on Sonys Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which took home the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

Warning: MAJOR SPOILERS for Avengers: Endgame are ahead!

As the final chapter of the Infinity Saga, Avengers: Endgame both marked the end of an era and set the stage for the next iteration of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, fell into the former category, as after Thanos and his forces had been defeated, the Star-Spangled Avenger decided to leave his superhero life behind and go back to the past to be with Peggy Carter.

Because Steve Rogers is still alive in the present day, albeit now over a century old, it seemed like there was still the possibility for Chris Evans to play the character again. However, according to directors Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Endgame did indeed mark Evans last appearance as Steve. As Joe Russo put it:

No, I think Chris Chris is a very emotional person. I think maybe its evident if you follow him on Twitter, because he does put his heart into what he says. But I feel like he has to close the door on things and emotionally move onto the next thing.

To be fair, its not as if Chris Evans didnt invest a lot of time into playing Captain America. He was cast as the patriotic superhero in early 2010 and he appeared in a Marvel movie every year from 2011 to 2019. Thats nine movies total, just one shy of Robert Downey Jr.s MCU run. Thats a tremendous accomplishment! Throw in his time as The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies, and Evans has more than enough superhero material on his resume.

As far as endings go, Steve Rogers definitely struck one of the biggest emotional chords in Avengers: Endgame. After Tony Starks funeral, Steve ventured into the Quantum Realm to put the Infinity Stones back in their proper time periods, and from the perspective of Hulk, Falcon and Winter Soldier, he was only supposed to be gone for a few seconds. Instead, he decided to go to the 1940s after his task was complete and stay there, living a beautiful life with Peggy Carter.

But there was one more thing the elderly Steve Rogers needed to do: pass on the Captain America mantle. He chose Falcon, a.k.a. Sam Wilson, to carry the vibranium shield in his place, a plot thread that will almost certainly be explored in the upcoming Falcon and Winter Soldier series on Disney+.

Maybe Chris Evans might change his mind down the line and be willing to make a cameo appearance as Old Man Steve in an MCU project, but as the Russos said during their visit to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, for now, hes moving on to new endeavors. Fortunately, MCU fans got to watch his arc unfold across nearly a decade, and though we wont be seeing Steve Rogers again, his legacy will continue to be felt in the years to come.

After making her video game debut in 1996's Tomb Raider, Lara Croft has gone on to become one of the most iconic characters in the history of gaming. The character's tenure has seen her appear in many video games and two films over the years, and now she is returning to the big screen with March's Tomb Raider. Alicia Vikander's portrayal of Lara Croft in the upcoming film will be the fourth different version of the character overall between the games and the films, but for Alicia Vikander, this just adds to the evolution of the Lara Croft and the richness of her history, as she explained:

I think it's a wonderful character that has been with us for like 22 years. She's become a great role model and I love the fact that she's been able to take such a big place as a female character in the gaming world and in cinema. I think there's definitely room for this character to evolve, and it felt like it came out in '96, and I think it reflects a strong woman with the same kind of essence still as a smart, very curious, feisty, vulnerable woman. It's almost like she has changed due to how society has changed, she has become more a woman of now, of the time.

The fact that Lara Croft has endured as long as she has is a testament to the appeal and interest the public has in a strong female character. But part of what has made Lara Croft a pop culture mainstay has been her reinvention. As Alicia Vikander told Game Informer, there is room for the character to grow and evolve beyond the original 1996 iteration. Different versions of a character are sometimes necessary. As society evolves and tastes change, what we want from our stories and characters changes with it. There's a reason the character has been rebooted in the video games to great success. The Lara Croft Alicia Vikander looks to be bringing to the screen is a complex and capable woman; a true badass that reflects society's more nuanced views of women and expectations for female characters. She is a role model not because of her looks, but because of her strength, both inside and out.

There is nothing wrong with new versions of fictional characters, and such evolutions are to be expected in order to keep the character fresh for new audiences and tell different stories. We saw a goofier, more fantastical James Bond before the current crop of Daniel Craig-led films, and the Batman suit no longer has nipples. Changing with the times is necessary and often for the better. Lara Croft in the original video game was the rare female hero in a male-dominated medium. But, as a product of the time, she was hyper-sexualized and featured proportions human biology does not allow for. Angelina Jolie brought the character to life on the big screen, but those films featured a fully-formed, confident Lara, whereas the new film will be introducing the character at the beginning of her journey.

When Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider video game franchise was rebooted in 2013, the focus was more on Lara Croft's survival skills than her looks, and it is clear that the upcoming film is very much inspired from that game. Each of these versions told us something new about the character while still remaining true to her nature as a badass, female Indiana Jones. Now, Alicia Vikander will be introducing fans to another new version of the character that could be the most compelling one yet.

Tomb Raider II/III Lara is my favorite with Legend being a close runner up.
