Zack Snyder Teases His Overall DC Movie Plans Were Better Than Flashpoint

We'll never see what Zack Snyder's fully realized DC Universe would have looked like, but the man himself promises it would have been amazing. In a recent social media post the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice director was asked if we would ever have seen a Flashpoint storyline in the DC film universe if things had gone as Snyder originally envisioned. In response, Snyder left a single word, "better."

Exactly where the current DC film universe is going as a cohesive world is far from clear but the one thing that does seem to be accurate is that Zack Snyder will not be at the helm. While Snyder is still technically a producer of the franchise, he left Justice League before reshoots were completed and his focus as a director now seems to be on an adaptation of The Fountainhead rather than anything involving comic book superheroes. Snyder says that he learned of Affleck's decision to leave the role of Batman when everybody else did, which would seem to confirm he's not directly involved in the franchise anymore.

Originally, Justice League was announced as being a two-part movie but that idea got squashed into a single film. How much of what Justice League turned out to be was the work of Snyder as opposed to Joss Whedon, who came in to handle reshoots, has been a topic of contention ever since.

Justice League largely floundered at the box office, but many vocal fans believe that if Snyder had been able to complete the movie himself a far superior film would have resulted.

At one point, it was announced that Flashpoint, the popular DC comics storyline that sees the Flash go back in time to change the past, and in doing so has unintended consequences on the present, was announced as being part of the DC film slate, but now it appears that won't be the case.

In a thread on the social media platform Vero, where Snyder paid tribute to Ben Affleck, who recently confirmed he will not be returning to play Batman in any future DC films, Snyder said that his plans for the DC film universe would have built to something even better than Flashpoint.

Snyder doesn't elaborate at all on what he means, but you can bet that fans all sort of had their minds blown at the idea. What exactly was Zack Snyder's grand plan for the DC heroes? He calls Ben Affleck the Best Batman Ever in his post, so one can certainly guess that Affleck leaving the role right now was certainly not part of Snyder's road map. Certainly, a great deal of material was lost when Justice League became a single film, but we still have little idea what would have been in that longer story or where it would have pointed afterward.

The Avengers: Infinity War Easter Egg Disney's Team Said No To

Spoilers are coming for Avengers: Infinity War. If you haven't caught the movie yet, it's still running in theaters!

Avengers: Infinity War has been out for several weeks, now, and we've already dissected most of the major plot points, as well as theorized about what could happen during Avengers 4. Yet, there's still plenty of fun things to talk about related to Marvel's latest venture, including things like Easter Eggs, or in this case, Easter Eggs that almost were a thing. If you watched Avengers: Infinity War, you may have noticed the movie features a plot point where the New York superheroes are trying to get ahold of Captain America, and at one point his number -- 678-136-7092 -- flashes on the screen. Apparently, the number was by design, and the Russo brothers had a whole plan for it. According to co-director Joe Russo,

We actually had intended to create a fake voicemail from Steve Rogers. For the people that left the theater and called that number, they would get a voicemail from Steve Rogers.

So, if you were one of the savvy Avengers: Infinity War viewers who were able to remember the number, you were probably hoping that calling the number would lead you down a rabbit hole to Steve Rogers and yield some fun results. Initially, both Joe and Anthony Russo wanted that moment to be a fun Easter Egg for fans. Eagle-eyed viewers could call the number and totally have an interactive moment with Captain America. It's a call-to-action type of viral campaign that other movies have done in the past. For example, the Carrie remake a few years ago asked fans to call a number to "learn what happened to Carrie." The Infinity War number would have been even more exciting, because it actually flashed on the screen during the movie, and would have been something that viewers could have taken home with them and talked about afterward. So what happened?

According to the interview Anthony and Joe Russo did with the Huffington Post, it was Disney's legal team that put the kabosh on the viral phone number message. (This could have to do with the myriad lawsuits Disney is dealing with at any given moment, although a reason isn't explicitly given.) According to Anthony Russo, the whole thing had already been planned to a tee when the affiliated legal team decided it was a bad idea. He said:

And that number was the actual number that we were going to use. We were sort of given that number. We had it all ready to go, but legal took that away from us.

While there are plenty of other fun Easter eggs in Avengers: Infinity War, including a nod to Arrested Development, had Disney and Marvel stuck with the Steve Rogers phone number, the movie would have had a more interactive component. Perhaps, it's the type of thing the legal team will be able to give the thumbs-up to down the line, and perhaps not. In the meantime, you can catch all manner of other cool stuff in Avengers: Infinity War, which is still in theaters. In addition, here's what we know about the upcoming Avengers 4.

The Big Differences The Girl In The Spider's Web Makes To Lisbeth And Mikael's Relationship

The complicated relationship between journalist Mikael Blomkvist and vengeful force of nature Lisbeth Salander has been the twisty thread connecting all of the films adapted from the Millennium series of novels. Any film trying to tell the next chapter of Lisbeth's story has to find a way to focus on Mikael, even though Fede Alvarez -- the director of the upcoming The Girl In The Spider's Web -- says this his film shifts its focus way more on Lisbeth than it does on her relationship to Mikael.

To that end, when CinemaBlend recently traveled to the Berlin set of The Girl In The Spider's Web to learn more about the dark thriller, we spoke with the new Lisbeth, Claire Foy (The Crown), about how the relationship between the two lead characters has evolved. This is the fourth book in the series, and so, there's real history that can be played with by Foy and her co-star, Sverrir Gudnason. And Foy explained to us:

I think from the outside, as a sort of spectator, you sort of just are like, 'Go on, get together, be happy!' If that was sort of the normal, common or garden story. But you know, it sort of diminishes how interesting they both are as characters. I think it makes it slightly different that we [as actors] are much closer in age. I mean obviously I'm supposed to be ever so slightly younger than I am. [Laughs]. But I think that makes it sort of more interesting in a way because it's not an age-difference thing. It's not like young girl, older man. It's actually that we have a deep connection, a deep understanding of one another. But it's like, in what world would these two people ever, could they ever make it work? And it's not just the fact that she's sort of a vigilante sort of person, but it's more the fact that, how do you even begin to cross that bridge of differences between them?

It's very true that previous interpretations of the Lisbeth-Mikael relationship -- whether it was Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist, or Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig -- played up the sizable age difference that made any type of romance seem uncomfortable. By design, mind you. Yes, in the books, Lisbeth and Mikael become lovers. But it wasn't the intention of Fede Alvarez or Claire Foy to go down that road again for The Girl In The Spider's Web. In fact, Foy elaborated in the same interview:

In this one, I think they have a shorthand. I think they've gone past that point. I think it was at the end of the third book where he's at her front door and is like, 'Alright, can I come in?' And [original author] Steig [Larsson] says something about letting him back in. ... She let him back into her life. And I think we haven't done that in this one. What we've said is the fact that they haven't seen each other for three years, and where have they gone? He's missed her, and she's got over him. And that, to me, is the interesting thing about where you find them. That she's like, 'No, no, no, I don't care about you anymore. I don't care!' And he's like, 'Come on....' And whether she goes for that, or not, is the thing. They're certainly not going to walk down the aisle. So yeah, that's never going to happen.

And yet, audiences still come back, eager to watch the evolution in the unconventional Lisbeth-Mikael relationship. Possibly because it's unlike anything that we see in our own lives? Or, maybe, because it's a mirror image of what we are living in, and it's comforting to see it on the big screen.
