Rami Malek Wanted To Delve Deeper Into Freddie Mercury's Personal Life In Bohemian Rhapsody

Bohemian Rhapsody provided a lot of entertainment if you're a fan of Queen, but it seems Rami Malek was hoping for even more. The man who plays Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury in the film says that, while he is pleased overall with the movie, he does wish it could have delved a bit deeper into Mercury's personal life and says he pushed for the film to include more, specifically regarding Mercury's relationship with Jim Hutton and other men. According to Malek...

I just kept pushing for more of that aspect of his life. I don't know if we ever felt fulfilled by it.

It's not too surprising to hear that somebody on the production of Bohemian Rhapsody wanted to see the movie get a little bit deeper in dealing with the life of the film's main character. The fact that the film is only a surface-deep exploration of Freddie Mercury was probably the major complaint coming out of the film. It recreates events on screen, but does little to explain them or explore why they happened. In the end, the film is more rock opera than it is a real biopic.

Jim Hutton, who would become a major part of Freddie Mercury's life is only given one scene before the movie begins its wrap up. Mercury's sexuality isn't hidden in the film, which was a fear that many had going in, but it also isn't really given any real time on screen beyond acknowledging he wasn't straight.

For what it's worth, Rami Malek tells Australia's Who that he understands why the movie wasn't able to do more. The film simply had so much material to cover. From Queen's meteoric rise into superstardom to Mercury's relationship with Mary Austin, which is the primary relationship in Mercury's life the film deals with, there apparently just wasn't room for more.

Certainly, Bohemian Rhapsody decided that what it really wanted to do was showcase Queen as a band, which means that a large portion of the film is dedicated to the creation and performance of particular songs, including a finale that recreates almost the entirety of the band's epic 1985 Live Aid performance. And it should be said that those musical moments are fantastic, but they do exist at the expense of other things.

If you wanted to see big musical moments with a movie theater's high-end sound system then Bohemian Rhapsody was everything that you needed. If, however, you wanted to learn something about Freddie Mercury, who he was, how he became the person we saw on stage or how he felt after becoming a star, you only get the briefest glimpse at that.

Rami Malek may have tried to give us more of Freddie Mercury but ultimately he wasn't able to make it happen. It doesn't make Bohemian Rhapsody a bad movie, just one that isn't quite as good as it could have been. Still, it rocks pretty hard.

Why A Wrinkle In Time Has Such A Diverse Cast, According To Ava DuVernay

Next month, a classic piece of literature will come to life when Ava DuVernay's A Wrinkle in Time debuts in theaters. The film looks like a proper adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's story, but one noticeable difference that has been made to the original story is the casting of a far more diver ensemble of actors to play these classic characters. So why the change? The Selma director addressed the diversity of A Wrinkle in Time's cast to CinemaBlend and other outlets during a visit to the set last year and explained that the casting represents the real diversity that exists in our own world, saying:

I just wanted a cast that reflects the real world. We're not doing anything that shouldn't have already been done. The question is, why hasn't this been done before? There's nothing outstanding and outlandish about this cast. It's outstanding and outlandish that there's been casts without true reflections and inclusiveness of our daily lives. It's about the way that you see it. So, I get that question a lot and my question back is, why haven't we been asking that question for the last 75 years or so? That's my answer to that.

If you have read the book, then you already know that the original version of A Wrinkle in Time doesn't focus excessively on the concept of diversity. In the original text and the previous movie, Meg Murry was a white girl with red hair, but Ava DuVernay made a point to cast African-American actress Storm Reid in the role. Beyond that, the parts of Mrs. Which and Mrs. Who will be played by Oprah Winfrey and Mindy Kaling, respectively, and the role of Red will be performed by Ant-Man's Michael Pena. The intention was not to force diversity for the sake of diversity, but to create an ensemble that felt indicative of the real diversity that exists in the world.

Building off of those ideas, Ava DuVernay explained later in the set visit that she ultimately hopes that a movie like A Wrinkle in Time can move the bar forward and set the standard for how we view inclusivity in our films, allowing us to treat it like the norm instead of as a novelty. DuVernay continued:

I hope this kind of film is the new normal and that they don't see anything odd or unique about a cast like this. I think we're a generation that's moving closer and closer to that, so that's a beautiful thing.

Of course, it's worth mentioning that diversity can also serve as a savvy business decision for a movie like this. Data has surfaced in the last few years suggesting that diverse ensembles of performers can translate to quantifiable improvements in box office performance overseas, and Marvel's Black Panther has definitively proven that there's an appetite for diverse and representative stories at the domestic box office as well. A Wrinkle in Time is just the next step towards making that "the new normal."

The Star Wars franchise is going back in time to explore an earlier version Han Solo when Alden Ehrenreich inherits the role from Harrison Ford in Solo: A Star Wars Story this weekend. That said, we already know that Han's life has been full of adventure, and it raises the question of whether or not future films could take Han to other eras of his life by aging up Ehrenreich. However, as the actor explained to CinemaBlend in a recent interview, he's wary of using that technology to play an older Han. Alden Ehrenreich told us:

I don't know. I have to see that technology more. I'm in the camp of it weirds me out. I don't know, you just see it, and there's something. It's like the uncanny valley. I mean they're so great at it now, it's kind of amazing, but I'm still in the camp of, I'm thinking about 'Oh they did that.'

So, it seems that you shouldn't hold your breath waiting to see Alden Ehrenreich looking ten or even twenty years older. Though the technology to bring him closer to Harrison Ford's visage definitely exists, he generally seems wary of its use because audiences can tell when filmmakers employ it.

Despite Alden Ehrenreich's hesitation to immediately get on board with this particular technology, it's clear that he does have a deep appreciation for what the folks at Disney can do with computer-generated effects these days. As we saw with the de-aged Luke Skywalker in The Last Jedi, as well as the digitally-recreated Princess Leia and Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the use of these techniques has slowly seeped into the Star Wars franchise as a whole. However, he merely needs to take a closer look at the technology and see it move beyond something that people directly point out and marvel at in a movie.

Of course, there's always the possibility of just letting time run its course, anyway. Alden Ehrenreich definitely shares some notable physical similarities with a young Harrison Ford, so if he sticks around in the role long enough, then the technology might not even be necessary. We just have to let time do its magic, and the 28-year-old actor could eventually match the look and feel of Ford -- who was roughly 34 years old when A New Hope debuted.

Although we still don't know if we will ever see Alden Ehrenreich play Han Solo in the later years of the beloved smuggler's life, we will get to see his origin story this weekend when Solo: A Star Wars Story premieres on May 25.
