Jennifer Lawrence Wouldn't Return For Dark Phoenix Unless Simon Kinberg Directed, He Says

After writing and producing several of the X-Men movies, Simon Kinberg finally sits in the director's chair for Dark Phoenix, the last film of Fox's superhero franchise. This is Kinberg's feature debut, and while taking on the final film in the saga may seem like a daunting task for a first time director, Kinberg had full support from the cast. In fact, Jennifer Lawrence apparently wouldn't return as Mystique unless he was the director, Kinberg recently said.

Since X-Men: First Class, the X-Men franchise has been led by Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult. The actors signed deals for three movies, and it was unclear if any of them would return for Dark Phoenix after X-Men: Apocalypse. Eventually, all of them eventually signed on for one more ride, and while it was unclear to all of us what was going to happen, Kinberg didn't doubt they'd be back.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Simon Kinberg revealed that they had always written drafts of the script expecting the actors to return. Kinberg knew they would be back because they had told him they would as long as he directed.

We presumed the First Class core cast Fassbender, McAvoy Jennifer, and Nic [Hoult] were coming back for this film. Part of the reason I presumed that was at the end of finishing X-Men: Apocalypse, when it was clear Bryan Singer was not going to direct the next movie, it was the actors that approached me about directing the next of the X-Men movies. Jennifer especially. Jen said she wouldnt come back for another movie unless I directed it. So, I had a lot of support from them.

With Bryan Singer -- who is the subject of multiple cases of alleged sexual assault on minors -- not returning for Dark Phoenix, Simon Kinberg was the logical choice to take the reins. He likely knows these characters inside and out, and the actors clearly had an admiration for him if he's the whole reason they came back.

Ultimately, everyone is back for one last hurrah. While this will be the last of Fox's X-Men movies, it wasn't always clear that would be the case. The Disney-Fox merger seemed to put an expiration date on the franchise, but according to Simon Kinberg, he went into it knowing that this would likely be the end.

I feel as though the notion of this being the last of this cycle of X-Men movies is tied for a lot of people, at least in the industry, to the Disney-Fox merger. In truth, when I sat down to write this movie, which was three years ago, I thought about it as the culmination of this cycle of X-Men movies.

The X-Men will one day be seen in the MCU, but until then, Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters on June 7.

Following its $420 million+ worldwide box office earnings and whopping eight Oscars nominations, A Star is Born has a lot to celebrate. The film has become one of the buzziest films of awards season, largely thanks to the talent of Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga and Sam Elliotts work on the musical drama. Amidst the starry-eyed success, Elliott was surrounded by devastation. In his words:

At the same time, all this stuff was going on with A Star is Born, all the screenings, all the Q&As, all the awards shows, that fucking fire came over the top of us in Malibu. We stayed, and poured the water on, and watched the guy next door burn to the ground. And then the floods came, or the rains came, and the shit came on the highways. You know, there were times right after the fire, when the coast highway was shut down, and I was trying to get through the roadblocks with a fucking tuxedo on, coming back from some event in town. The two juxtaposing each other was a weird thing. Its still very present out there.

Wow, thats intense! In his interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sam Elliott spoke out about how the Woolsey Fire that swept across Southern Californias Malibu in November affected his and his wife Katharine Ross home, which was almost destroyed. Its crazy to imagine promoting a glitzy film such as A Star is Born while dealing with the emotional tragedy that brushed through his neck of the woods. It certainly couldnt have been easy.

Sam Elliott said while much of Malibu is covered in green now, a lot was lost in the Woolsey Fire and its going to be a long time before it goes back to how it was. Thousands of homes were burned during the wildfire, including the homes of Gerard Butler, Miley Cyrus and Neil Young, along with The Bachelor mansion from the ABC show and sets used for HBOs Westworld.

As Malibu begins to pick up its feet, Sam Elliott can celebrate his first Oscar nomination ever for Best Supporting Actor, among the many nominations the Bradley Cooper film has received nods for, including for Best Picture and Best Original Song for Shallow." The actor has been performing for 50 years and known best for his roles in Road House, Tombstone and The Hero, to name a few.

The actor was particularly a highlight in A Star is Born as Jackson Maines older brother and manager, who says the films most memorable lines about 12 notes (if you know, you know). In terms of the Oscars race, Elliott shares the category with Green Books Mahershala Ali, who has overwhelmingly been the favorite during award season.

Sean Penn recently penned an essay about his disappointment how he thinks A Star is Born isnt being recognized enough as other nominees such as Bohemian Rhapsody and Green Book have been elevated in conversation. Tom Cruise is a huge movie star and with that comes a certain amount of power and control. However, sometimes there's just nothing you can do to make the circumstances of a shot any better for yourself. Mission: Impossible Fallout director Christopher McQuarrie recently revealed an image from the set of the new movie that involved a stunt where Tom Cruise had to jump out of an airplane. However, in order to get the shot just the way they wanted, the shot could only be done during a particular three minute period, and since the scene required two minutes of action, it could only be attempted once per day. Even Tom Cruise can't keep the sun sitting in the sky (as far as I know). We tend to think of the life of a movie star as being a fairly carefree existence, but there has to be a pretty significant amount of pressure that goes along with a shot like this. If you screw up, not only do you have to do the take again, but you have to come back tomorrow to try again. Then you get to spend all day thinking about how you're only going to have one shot that day to get it right, and if there's a problem, you'll have to come back the next day.

It understandable why this was, according to Christopher McQuarrie's Instagram post, left to be the last shot of the production. If there were significant issues getting it, there's the possibility it could delay everything that needs to come after it. By leaving it until the end, nobody is waiting for anything except this last shot.

Also, if Tom Cruise breaks a bone, it doesn't put the production back by several weeks. Such was the case when Cruise, performing stunts himself as he almost always does, broke his foot leaping from one rooftop to another while filming Mission: Impossible Fallout. Of course, breaking bones didn't deter the actor from continuing to perform stunts himself, and as soon as filming resumed he was jumping on helicopters again. The delay has resulted in the new film having a shorter than normal post-production period, but the plus side of doing so many stunts practically is that you don't need to spend a lot of time creating things digitally.

The Mission: Impossible series is one of the most popular action franchises currently running today and there are a lot of fans all over the world who are looking forward to the next installment. In addition to Tom Cruise, the new movie co-stars Henry Cavill and also Henry Cavill's mustache.
