Michael B. Jordan Started Pushing For White Roles During Fruitvale Station

Over the last few years, Michael B. Jordan has handily turned into one of Hollywood's most promising actors. One of the watershed moments of his career came with the release of Ryan Coogler's Fruitvale Station, which saw him deliver a powerhouse performance as the late Oscar Grant. That film marked a transition for his career too, as it signified the moment that he opted to stop going out for roles written for black actors. The actor explained:

Right around the time 'Fruitvale Station' went down, I told my agents I didn't want to go out for any roles written for African Americans. I didn't want it. I wanted only white men. That's it. That's all I want to do. Me playing that role is going to make it what it is. I don't want any pre-bias on the character...Writers write what they know, what they think encounters with us would be, and that's slight bias.

Prior to Fruitvale Station, Michael B. Jordan had played numerous roles written for black actors in TV shows like The Wire and films like Red Tails. However, following his portrayal of Oscar Grant (a young black man shot by police in San Francisco on New Year's Eve in 2009) in Fruitvale Station, he opted to make the change. Instead of sticking to the roles written for black actors, he called his agent and demanded characters written for white actors to remove "slight bias" from the casting process.

We have seen the effects of that decision over the course of the last few years as well. Perhaps most notably, Michael B. Jordan was cast to play the traditionally-white Johnny Storm in Josh Trank's Fantastic Four. More recently, he played Guy Montag in HBO's update of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451.

By making that career shift and going out for roles written for white actors, Michael B. Jordan also apparently got a chance to sidestep some of the perceived competition that young black actors face. Elsewhere in his appearance on Variety's Actors on Actors series, Jordan elaborated:

I wanted to go out for these roles because it was just playing people. It didn't have to be like, 'You're playing the black guy in this.' And everybody would be going out for the same role. Every young black actor from ages 17 to 40 going out for the same role. How do you reverse engineer that problem of pitted competition with each other and give more opportunities to eat and be successful?

There have obviously been some exceptions to that rule in recent years. Michael B. Jordan continued his ascent through Hollywood with performances in movies like Creed and Black Panther, playing roles that specifically required a black actor. Nevertheless, Jordan has made it clear that he doesn't just want to portray characters specifically written to fit a race.

Mark Hamill Is Having Fun With Fans Over Star Wars Episode IX Casting News

The first news about Star Wars: Episode IX has begun to hit the rumor mill, so you can be sure fans are getting excited. As usual, Mark Hamill is having some fun with that excitement. The Luke Skywalker actor has a sense of humor on par with the Joker and while he clearly loves Star Wars he doesn't mind poking the fans a little in the name of fun. In that vein, he recently posted some "breaking news" regarding the newest piece of casting for the end of the current trilogy, an empty robe.

Mark Hamill is, of course, having some fun with the fact that Luke Skywalker vanished at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi. His robe fell to the rock he was sitting on before blowing away. Apparently, the robe will still be important in Episode IX, and director J.J. Abrams has found the perfect robe to play the part.

Of course, the real question fans have is not will we see the robe again, it's will we see the man in the robe again. While Luke Skywalker may have become one with the Force at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, that hardly guarantees that we won't see the character in Episode IX. Alec Guinness spent more time as a force ghost in the original Star Wars trilogy than he did as a living character. Most fans seem to expect that we will see Luke again in one form or another, but that has yet to be confirmed.

The "robe casting" follows on the reveals of other news for the upcoming film that would appear to be more legit. First, we received an apparent confirmation that Billy Dee Williams will return to the Star Wars franchise as Lando Calrissian. More recently it's been reported that one of J.J. Abrams go-to actresses, Keri Russell, has also been cast in the film.

With filming set to get underway soon, we'll very likely get at least a few official confirmations from Lucasfilm regarding casting, even though we likely won't get a lot of other details. With J.J. Abrams back at the helm as writer and director, we can expect the entire film will be placed inside Abrams' famed "mystery box" meaning that we'll get even less information than we otherwise might.

A Star Is Born Rating Changed In New Zealand After Teens Are 'Triggered'

Spoilers ahead for A Star Is Born.

As Awards Season slowly approaches, moviegoers should expect to see plenty of Oscar bait hitting theaters in the next few months. First up to bat was Bradley Cooper's directorial debut A Star Is Born, starring he and pop star turned actress Lady Gaga. A third remake of the classic tale, Cooper brought an emotionally devastating drama to audiences, but it looks like the ending was especially intense for New Zealand moviegoers.

A Star Is Born contains an emotional gut punch, as Bradley Cooper's Jackson Maine hangs himself in his garage during the third act. This sequence proved especially upsetting for New Zealand audiences, so literature is being distributed during screenings, containing a trigger warning about a suicidal scene. While potentially a major spoiler for the contents of the film, it's a change that New Zealand film classification board head David Shanks believes is necessary after complaints started rolling in.

David Shanks recently made a statement about this decision, saying:

Many people in New Zealand have been impacted by suicide. For those who have lost someone close to them, a warning gives them a chance to make an informed choice about watching.

This comment, which comes to us from The Guardian, helps to bring context to the New Zealand film classification board's decision. The film industry has become much more cognizant of how movies affect audiences, especially when it comes to sensitive subjects like suicide. And that's also the case in New Zealand specifically.

Jackson's suicide in A Star Is Born is truly harrowing, especially the way Bradley Cooper's direction brought the terrible event to life. The jaded rock star actually made a previous attempt on his own life as a young boy. This exposition is delivered as almost an anecdote by Jackson, but it becomes clear that the event stuck with him.

After believing he will ruin Ally's life and career, Jackson lives his final day. He says goodbye to his wife and adorable dog, and hangs himself in the garage in a silent and haunting sequence. It's undoubtedly hard to sit through, and brings the momentum and joy of Jackson's newfound sobriety to a screeching halt. It also leaves Lady Gaga's character despondent while mourning.

While no doubt triggering for many, Bradley Cooper's direction of A Star Is Born kept the event offscreen, which is both understated and arguably more powerful as a choice. Moviegoers were privy to the moments before and after Jackson took his own life, with his dog's distress echoing what audiences felt in that moment.

Avengers: Infinity War Ending Explained

As is implied by the headline, this story is all about the ending of Joe and Anthony Russo's Avengers: Infinity War. It is LOADED with spoilers. Stop reading if you haven't seen the film, and come back here when you have.

We weren't ready for that. No matter how bleak you thought Avengers: Infinity War would get, the actual ending to the film delivered a staggering gut-punch from a villain wearing a massive gauntlet on his meaty paw. Thanos (Josh Brolin) won. He acquired every Infinity Stone, digging the last one out of Vision's forehead and leaving the hero as an empty husk on the ground in Wakanda. The Avengers lost. For now.

We think that this will get resolved in Avengers 4. The sequel has no subhed yet, but this movie -- while having a resolution -- offers a cliffhanger that needs to be cleaned up. Let's discuss what the ending of Avengers: Infinity War means, and the three ways that it could be continued in the upcoming movies.

Are the heroes really dead?It looks like it. Thanos completed his quest to bring balance to an overpopulated world by eliminating half of existence. He snapped his finger while wearing the Gauntlet, and people started fading to dust. Literally. The affected included such key members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and even Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), who surfaced in an end-credits scene.

The movie ends with the existing Avengers as confused as the audience. What actually happened to these heroes? They don't drop dead. They fade away, and are very much alive and aware of what's happening to them as it happens. Spider-Man even resists it long enough to apologize to Tony (Robert Downey Jr.) in one of the film's most heartbreaking moments.

So, are they dead? Have they phased away to another realm? Could they be brought back? For now, it looks like they are -- in the definition of a comic book movie -- dead. They are gone. They could come back, though, and the movie left a few interesting threads that could be pulled for Avengers 4. Yes, Thanos won, and brought balance to the universe by eliminating half of it with the snap of his fingers. But here's how the ending could set up a beginning for the next chapter of the MCU. Read on.

Doctor Strange knows how to winWhy on Earth -- or Titan, I suppose -- would Doctor Strange turn over the Time Stone so easily? The Sorcerer Supreme made it crystal clear that he'd sacrifice Iron Man and Spider-Man so long as it meant protecting the Time Stone from Thanos. He didn't agree with Tony's plan to bring the Time Stone anywhere near Thanos. However, in a very key scene, Strange used his magic to play out every scenario where the Avengers faced off against Thanos. And in only ONE scenario did the heroes prevail.

So, that successful timeline HAD to include Doctor Strange turning over the Time Stone. It's the only logical explanation for why the sorcerer would surrender the precious gem that was in his possession. At one point, Thanos even questions why Doctor Strange never used the power of the Time Stone against him. Thanos uses it immediately, to restore Vision so he can claim the final Mind Stone.

Does this mean that Doctor Strange knows how to use the Time Stone later to reverse Thanos' balancing? It's possible. The person who wields the Infinity Gauntlet can control all things, including bringing souls back to life, altering reality, or reversing time. So while the ending of Infinity War was earned, it's hardly final. If Strange is right, it's all part of the plan. He's not the only one with a plan, though. Here's what else could happen.

Captain Marvel could save the dayIf you stayed through the end credits (and of course you did, you are a Marvel fan), you saw Nick Fury trigger a distress signal right before he succumbed to Thanos' balancing and faded to dust. The device he was using fell to the ground, with the word "Sending..." Then, the message went through, and we saw a logo that stands for Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel.

There are two Marvel movies that will arrive in theaters between Infinity War and Avengers 4. In July, Ant-Man and the Wasp will explore the Quantum Realm. And Brie Larson will bring Captain Marvel to life on screen in March 2019. This is a new superhero in the MCU, one that will expand on the galactic side of the universe. And it will be set in the 1990s. So, somewhere in that movie, it will be explained what Nick Fury saw that led him to want to create The Avengers Initiative in the first place. And, it has to explain where Carol has been this whole time.

The answer to that one could clarify where the Avengers have gone following their demise in Infinity War. Or, Captain Marvel could have a power that solves how to bring everyone back. There's a lot of mystery to the things that Captain Marvel can do in the MCU, and after her solo movie, we'll have a better understanding about what could happen in Avengers 4. Either way, she has been signaled by Nick Fury, and he's alerting her to come back. The "why" will be a huge question to answer for the MCU.

The Quantum Realm could come into playWe know that two heroes were absent from Avengers: Infinity War, but the excuses were flimsy. Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) accepted house arrest following the events of Captain America: Civil War, so they could be home with their families. It's possible that Hawkeye could turn up the heat in Avengers 4, but if one of the two was going to be responsible for somehow reversing the Thanos spell, it could be Scott, Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lillie) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas).

Ant-Man and the Wasp is expected to dive deep into the mysterious realm of the Quantum Realm when it opens in July. Aside from being mentioned in the latest trailer, we know that Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) is a big part of this sequel, and Janet was lost in the Quantum Realm decades ago.

Much like Doctor Strange's numerous powers, the world of the Quantum Realm has largely been unexplored, and could hold secrets to defeating Thanos in Avengers 4. There could be clues to the eventual resolution to the Infinity War cliffhanger in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Or it could be a fun, standalone story that does nothing to solve the problem. We'll know for sure in a few weeks.

Yes, Avengers: Infinity War ended on a cliffhanger, with our main villain sacrificing everything for what he believed needed to happen -- balance in the universe. And yes, half of our mighty Marvel family was turned to dust, literally. But it's my belief that the Avengers will live to fight another day. Specifically, May 3, 2019. For now, what do you think will happen following this harrowing, heartwrenching ending?
